Storm Chasing Tours Almost Sold Out & Hurricane Michael

I want to start off by saying thank you to all of our storm chasing tours guests. We have nearly booked full for the 2019 season already and, have many folks already booked for the 2020 chase season. I couldn’t do it without my guests and their support - so thank you! It looks to be an exciting time for Extreme Chase Tours and we are blessed to be able to share our passion and love for severe weather with everyone. That said, for those that have been following me or Extrwme Chase Tours on social media, you know by now that we indeed have a “sleeper”  hurricane that has formed into a major Cat4 hurricane as I write this. Winds are currently sustained at 130+mph and gusting to over 140mph. Currently Hurricane Michael is targeting the panhandle of Florida. I have been doing updates on all social media platforms with updated video and content.

I encourage those in these areas to please take mandatory evacuation orders seriously. This could be a storm that won’t soon be forgotten.

Been a little while since I have posted due to finishing up the 2018 storm chasing tours. Now on to the 2019 Storm Chasing Tours!

I have made a few changes to the website recently, changing some backend things and trying to “clean it up” up a little. Even that has proven difficult due to the ongoing weather we have had locally    Such as the Diggins, MO tornado which I documented and all the rain and severe weather.

That said, currently we have some very limited seating on many of our Storm Chasing Vacations Tours. And is usual, it looks as though Extreme Chase Tours will book all seats full soon. So if you are intersted in going on the most affordable Storm Chasing Tour and personal Tornado Tour in Tornado Alley, now is THE TIME TO RESERVE your seats.  I have posted a short video below of just a few of our guests from this season and just a few tornadoes and awe inspiring storm structure shots that we documented. It was a wonderful year and I’d like to personally that all of our tour guests for choosing us to make their storm chasing dreams come true. Some folks had never seen a tonado or even a real severe storm or supercell. To see their eyes light up and smiles on their faces was truly why I do what I do. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

As we now focus on getting back to our real jobs and real lives - some of us like me, are still immersed in the weather. For example, I shoot and report weather for some of the major networks. And as such, I am keeping my eye on the current situation with hurricane Lane which is now a CAT5 hurricane with sustained winds at around 160+ mph!

Yes this year has indeed been a strange year...we didn’t get the kind of numbers of tornadoes that we usually get in the continual US but we (Extreme Chase Tours) managed to see a tornado on every tour we had. Which is something I am proud of. But I wonder what this hurricane season into the fall and finally the winter season will bring? Questions to be seen for sure.

As far as 2019, the ossicaltions seem on par with having a decent year but Ma Nature plays by her own rules so who knows. What I do know is that we WILL be storm chasing and trying to document tornadoes for our guests no matter what.

How To Receive Severe And Tornado Warnings

Been super busy with engineering the electronics for #PACRITEX 2018 Tornado Research Mission, so I have not had a chance to blog much. But with severe weather season basically almost upon us, I thought I might write a quick blog post regarding receiving severe weather warnings.

So how do you receive weather warnings and watches? This would include severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings? Many folks still rely on the outdated outdoor siren - but I can tell you first hand that there are many issues with receiving tornado warnings this way. I'll not go into detail (but supposes you were in a part of your house and couldn't hear that siren? See where I a going with this?)

The BEST way to receive any kid of life threatening warning is via an NOAA weather radio. Yes, you can monitoe your local media outlets, but what happens if you lose power and do not have a back up battery radio? TheNOAA weather radio will alert you to all of the latest info at your fingertips and it uses the SAME technology. We utilize a NOAA weather radio in every one of our Storm Chasing Tour Vehicles for Extreme Chase Tours while on tour - and of course, we also have one at our home as well.

2018 Storm Chasing Tours - Hurry and book now!

Currently we have snow on the ground and we are coming out of a bitter cold temp spell so to speak. Makes it awful hard to think about severe weather and tornadoes, but we should have a chance for at least some locally severe storms on Sunday *if*the models are correct.

All of that said, many of my readers know that severe weather season is really just around the corner, and as such - so is the chase and storm chasing tour season. In fact, we have many of our tours that are already booked full or have very limited seating.

Haven't had a chance to make a blog post in a while, but I thought I would let everyone know that Extreme Chase Tours storm chasing tours and tornado tours are filling up fast! In fact, we just booked a couple from the UK this week and another couple from Australia today, and we booked a young lady from Australia last week as well.

Well that is certainly a fair question, especially with gas prices on the rise again and less people traveling or going on road trips for their yearly vacations.
So as a Tour owner myself, I thought I would write my next blog post about cheap vacations and where to find them. But there is a short list that you should probably go over before you make any decision as to the word "cheap".

1. Where do you want to go to vacation?
2. What kind of vacation are you looking at? Surfing, Going to Grandma's house? Going to Vegas? Going to the mountains for the family getaway?
3. And finally, what does "cheap" mean to you? As in how much are you willing to spend on this vacation?

Those three questions are wonderful starting points - they will help you outline the where, when, why, and how much. And most importantly, they will help you decide what "cheap" really means to you and what you can afford.

That's right, www.extremechasetours.com and www.stormchasingvacations.com are now one Storm Chasing and Tornado Chasing Tours company! Owned and operated by 26 year storm chasing veteran, Lanny Dean. For those that might be interested but don't know about Lanny or Extreme Chase Tours this blog post will hopefully shed some light on the companies and on Lanny.

Lanny Dean is a native Okie and lives just west of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is the CEO, owner and operator of Extreme Chase Tours and Storm Chasing Vacations. He is also the lead Tour guide. Lanny is a 26 year storm chasing veteran and one of the best storm chasing tour guides in the business. You may have seen Lanny on the hit show "Tornado Hunters" that aired on TruTV. He has appeared on many various local and national networks including: The Weather Channel, Storm Stories, CNN, ABC, Good Morning America, TLC, The Discovery Channel, MSNBC, NBC, RealTV, Inside Edition, Fox News and many other media outlets as well as many local markets throughout the United States and around the world. Lanny is also a former member of The Outlaw Chasers and he has witnessed and filmed 516 tornadoes & 12 major hurricanes to date. Lanny was awarded "Storm Chaser Of The Year" in 2005 and 2007 for his coverage of the Greensburg, KS EF-5 tornado. He is the only current storm chasing tour owner/operator to hold that award. In 2012 and 2013 Lanny and Extreme Chase Tours won Best Of Small Business Tulsa award in travel and tourism. Lanny is trained in meteorology, is a true Severe Storm Expert and is one of the best weather forecasters chasing today.

Lightning photography near Tulsa

Nice little cell produced some good photography opportunities early this morning west of Tulsa. I didn't have my camera settings correct exactly (in my haste to get set up) but it worked. This lightning pic with structure was probably the best of the pictures that I took. Hoping for more weather like this in the future!

The Lanny Dean experience

I have chased with many different tour guides now and they all have had different personalities and guiding styles. We have the calm and informative style of Charles Edwards and Brian Morganti or the friendly and dedicated style of Gene Robertson and Allan Dietrich. They were all excellent tour guides but I really loved chasing with Lanny Dean.
People sometimes ask me what I find so interesting about storms. I am always a bit surprised by the question, like “How can you not be fascinated by tornadoes?!”. I guess everyone would find a full contrast, destructive tornado fascinating but we all know storm chasing is not like that every day. What makes every day special is the build up, the growing excitement, the let-downs and surprises, and the clues the storms gives you it might produce something spectacular.
That is why you can look at dark coloured, condensed water in the sky for hours – with an adrenalin rush. Often, you have no idea what you are looking at, what might happen or if you have any reasons to be excited – and that is what Lanny Dean brings to the storms. He has seen some 300-400 tornadoes I think but is still over excited about inflow, possible funnel clouds and wall clouds and he really brought that passion (and knowledge) to us guests.
Below is a video I just put up on Youtube that was filmed on our only real chase day of the unlucky tour of May 2014. We saw an anti-cyclonic land spout tornado that day (not in the video) but nothing else really, it still was a spectacular day thanks to the excitement and passion brought by Lanny.
