Extreme Chase Tours Storm Chasing Tours Website

Been a little while since I have posted due to finishing up the 2018 storm chasing tours. Now on to the 2019 Storm Chasing Tours!

I have made a few changes to the website recently, changing some backend things and trying to “clean it up” up a little. Even that has proven difficult due to the ongoing weather we have had locally    Such as the Diggins, MO tornado which I documented and all the rain and severe weather.

That said, currently we have some very limited seating on many of our Storm Chasing Vacations Tours. And is usual, it looks as though Extreme Chase Tours will book all seats full soon. So if you are intersted in going on the most affordable Storm Chasing Tour and personal Tornado Tour in Tornado Alley, now is THE TIME TO RESERVE your seats.  I have posted a short video below of just a few of our guests from this season and just a few tornadoes and awe inspiring storm structure shots that we documented. It was a wonderful year and I’d like to personally that all of our tour guests for choosing us to make their storm chasing dreams come true. Some folks had never seen a tonado or even a real severe storm or supercell. To see their eyes light up and smiles on their faces was truly why I do what I do. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

As we now focus on getting back to our real jobs and real lives - some of us like me, are still immersed in the weather. For example, I shoot and report weather for some of the major networks. And as such, I am keeping my eye on the current situation with hurricane Lane which is now a CAT5 hurricane with sustained winds at around 160+ mph!

Yes this year has indeed been a strange year...we didn’t get the kind of numbers of tornadoes that we usually get in the continual US but we (Extreme Chase Tours) managed to see a tornado on every tour we had. Which is something I am proud of. But I wonder what this hurricane season into the fall and finally the winter season will bring? Questions to be seen for sure.

As far as 2019, the ossicaltions seem on par with having a decent year but Ma Nature plays by her own rules so who knows. What I do know is that we WILL be storm chasing and trying to document tornadoes for our guests no matter what.

We’d love to have you join us for one of our 2019 Storm Chasing Tours & Tornado Tours, so if you are intersted, please feel free to check out our website @ www.extremechasetours.com
Or feel free to give me a call & 918-859-0248. I am ALWAYS available to you either via email or directly by phone as well.

A small sample of just some of the video we shot this season below. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks so much -Lanny

HOW TO BECOME A STORM CHASER

How To Become A Storm Chaser

How can I become a storm chaser? That is one of the most frequent questions that we get asked while out on a Storm Chasing Tour, or just out chasing storms in general. And while there are literally thousands of Storm Chasers out on the roads during the storm chasing season at any given time, many if not most started storm chasing or tornado chasing much in the same way. Generally it starts with an intense interest in weather or tornadoes, or even maybe a close call or interaction with severe weather at some point in their lives. Much the the same way owner, Lanny Dean had when he was 7 years old. Some folks then turn that fear into fascination, and then the fascination grows into a deep interest. In turn, the interest turns into knowledge and wanting to learn as much about severe weather, tornadoes and storm chasing. Some go on to college to get a degree or some tun to their local spotter networks and become trained storm spotters through the National Weather Service. These folks however, are not storm chasers, they are Storm Spotters for their local areas via their local NWS offices.

HOW DO YOU GET STARTED IN STORM CHASING?

I saw my first tornado when I was 7 while on vacation with my family. The fear as described above turned into fascination and it just started then. When I really started storm chasing there weren't many people chasing at that time. This was in 1990 and storm chasing had not gone to the mainstream yet. The movie Twister was not even a concept and it would be another 6 years before it would come out. I had done it as a hobby and anytime a storm would be within 25 miles I would go chase it! I then started going on chases much further away. Each chase I went on was different as each tornado was as well. And eventually I wanted to share what I was seeing and experiencing -  the feelings, the sights, and the sounds of storm chasing. I wanted to share it with the world because to me, there was no better feeling in the world than storm chasing. So I started Extreme Chase Tours in 1999 per time. As they say, the rest is history.

HOW DO I BECOME A STORM CHASER?

Unfortunately there are no real ways of becoming a storm chaser. There are no schools that offer storm chasing as we know it, and there are no real instruction manuals per se. There are a number of books on the market that may teach you the basic book knowledge of storm structure or what severe weather and storms may look like. One such book is called The Storm Chasing Handbook written by meteorologist and veteran storm chaser, Tim Vasquez. It has a ton of information and graphic context in it and it would be a good place to start for the novice. The direct link to The Storm Chasers Handbook from Amazon can be found here:
https://www.amazon.com/Storm-Chasing-Handbook-Tim-Vasquez/dp/0970684037

BUT AREN'T THERE SOME KINDS OFSTORM CHASING CLASSES AVAILABLE?

There is no course work you can go and take to become a storm chaser. Most of it is learned by going out and chasing. The local National Weather Service in your area will provide Storm Spotter training sessions usually in the early spring before tornado and severe weather season starts.  These training sessions are usually just a basic presentation of storm spotting and structure and are in no means a way of explaining or learning to chase tornadoes or storm chasing. While these are wonderful events to attend, especially for the novice, there is no storm chasing instructional manual or knowledge given. These events are meant for Storm Spotting.

SO HOW CAN I START STORM CHASING OR BECOME A STORM CHASER?

We obviously recommend going with a storm chasing and tornado tour company. One that has many years of storm chasing tours experience and has veteran guides who are willing to educate and teach you about storm structure, how to read radar, verbiage and the science behind it all. Your best bet is to go with a smaller storm chasing tour company as they can spend more one on one time with you. This means they are more personal and will be willing to answer any questions you might have and to help guide you to severe weather and tornadoes - all while explaining what is happening so you can understand.  Depending on your interest and desire to learn, we recommend going with a tour company for at east two years. This time frame will allow you to learn and will give you a very good idea if storm chasing is right for you, and if it is, you may want to go to school for meteorology or atmospheric sciences.

ARE THERE JOBS AS A STORM CHASER?
The short answer is no. There are no formal jobs as a storm chaser. You might be able to join a field campaign study if you decide to go to college for meteorology, or with many years of hard work chasing, you might be able to chase for a local media outlet but the pay is nominal at best.

SO MY BEST BET IS TO GO WITH A STORM CHASING TOUR COMPANY OR WITH SOMEONE WHO IS EXPERIENCED?

YES! Storm chasing can be dangerous or even deadly to those who are untrained. Period. Never go chasing on your own, start with a tour company as outlined above and then transition from there if you would like. Don’t go chasing unless you have knowledge of storm structure and interaction. Currently there are about 12 legitimate storm chasing tours and tornado tours vacation companies in the industry right now. So choose wisely and make sure you do your homework about the tour company you decide to go with. How many years have they been chasing or how long have they been in business? What is their safety record? Do they take precautions to keep you safe at all times? Have hey seen tornadoes? Do they have REAL tornado pictures and videos on their website? Are they reputable? Insured? These are just a few questions to start with to help you get on your way to becoming a Storm Chaser.

Storm Chasing Tours and Storm Chasing Vacations?

That's right, www.extremechasetours.com and www.stormchasingvacations.com are now one Storm Chasing and Tornado Chasing Tours company! Owned and operated by 26 year storm chasing veteran, Lanny Dean. For those that might be interested but don't know about Lanny or Extreme Chase Tours this blog post will hopefully shed some light on the companies and on Lanny.

Lanny Dean is a native Okie and lives just west of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is the CEO, owner and operator of Extreme Chase Tours and Storm Chasing Vacations. He is also the lead Tour guide. Lanny is a 26 year storm chasing veteran and one of the best storm chasing tour guides in the business. You may have seen Lanny on the hit show "Tornado Hunters" that aired on TruTV. He has appeared on many various local and national networks including: The Weather Channel, Storm Stories, CNN, ABC, Good Morning America, TLC, The Discovery Channel, MSNBC, NBC, RealTV, Inside Edition, Fox News and many other media outlets as well as many local markets throughout the United States and around the world. Lanny is also a former member of The Outlaw Chasers and he has witnessed and filmed 516 tornadoes & 12 major hurricanes to date. Lanny was awarded "Storm Chaser Of The Year" in 2005 and 2007 for his coverage of the Greensburg, KS EF-5 tornado. He is the only current storm chasing tour owner/operator to hold that award. Lanny holds a B.S. in Electronic Telecommunications Engineering with some undergrad work in Atmospheric science. He spent many years working in the media receiving many awards for his photojournalism, photography and reporting, including an Emmy nomination for his weather reporting. Lanny has been working on a scientific project recording acoustic data in and around supercells and tornadoes and recently had an opportunity to work with the late Mr. Tim Samaras. He also worked for KJRH Channel 2 in Tulsa as their Severe Weather Reporter and Photographer, prior to KJRH, Lanny worked at KAKE-TV Channel 10 in Wichita, KS as their Severe Weather Reporter and Photographer. While working in the media Lanny also won several SPJ (Society Of Professional Journalist) awards as well as being recognized by the Oklahoma Association Of Broadcasters and The Kansas Association Of Broadcasters for his weather reporting and photography. In 2012 and 2013 Lanny and Extreme Chase Tours won Best Of Small Business Tulsa award in travel and tourism. Lanny is trained in meteorology, is a true Severe Storm Expert and is one of the best weather forecasters chasing today.

Storm Chasing Tours & Vacations

In 1999 Owner and 26 year tornado chasing tours veteran and tour operator, Lanny Dean, had a dream - he wanted to share his knowledge, love and passion of severe weather and tornadoes with the general public by offering private affordable storm chasing tours and weather adventure tours in tornado alley. Later that year the concept of giving true personal Storm & Tornado Chasing Tours was realized and he opened up the doors to Extreme Chase Tours. Since that time our concept hasn't changed. For the last 18 years Extreme Chase Tours has made it our mission statement and goal to give quality storm chasing tours and tornado tours versus quantity. A concept that we refuse to waiver from! We refuse to load up and cram two or three 15 seat passenger vans full with our clients like many other tour companies do - leaving little to no interaction with the Storm Tour Guide or driver. To us, this is counterproductive to all group tours as many of the folks in the rear of the van cannot communicate or even hear or see what is happening. We truly believe in quality VS quantity!  We were the first storm chasing tour company to offer a smaller quality tours, with personal one on one interaction and education with ALL of our storm chasing guests. In 2005 and 2007 owner, Lanny Dean, was the first storm chaser ever to receive the prestigious "Storm Chaser of the Year" award given by IPEXCEL. Extreme Chase Tours was the first to offer personal severe weather photography tours, and we were the first storm chasing tour company to win The Best Of Tulsa Small Business Award in Tours category in 2012 and 2013!  Many folks talk about being first - we WERE the first to offer these services. Our tornado chasing tours are designed with our guests and clients in mind, from the first interaction with us, to your departure day - we strive and work for our guests! Come see why Extreme Chase Tours has a 77% guest return rate and why we were voted storm chasers of the year! Get ready for the storm chasing tour adventure of a lifetime!

La Crosse KS Tornado 5-25-12 Video

We have been so busy with the tours that I simply have not had time to update the blog with any news. From tornadoes in Kansas back on April 14, tornadoes in New Mexico to Tornadoes back in Kansas on 5-25-12.....we have been really busy!

Below is just a quick video of the tornado near La Crosse, KS from the 25Th that we intercepted and filmed. Eric did a wonderful job doing phoners with KAKE trying to help get the word out as I called DDC directly to let them know exactly what was going on. We were very worried that
La Crosse might take a direct hit...and they actually did from smaller EF-1 satellite tornado as can be seen in the graphic below:
When we first arrived on the south side of La Crosse, the police officer and county officials did not even know that there was indeed a tornado on the ground. They had heard about the tornado warning but "didn't really see any danger"....as we all know this can and does happen more than what the actual public knows. While I commend the local spotters for doing their job (after the fact) this video should be a clear testament to all local city and county officials as to what chasers can do in helping with the warning process.
I have taken much heat early this year from the situation that happened up in Dickinson County, I would encourage all those folks from Dickinson county and all the "media" that picked up the story to re-think the role that chasers can and do often play....even a those that run or own a storm chasing tour business. WE DO NOT MAKE A LIVING OFF OF THE DEMISE OF OTHERS....I certainly do not know one single chaser that makes an entire living off of weather as a whole to begin with. What we do is enjoy mother nature in all of her glory, good and bad. And when/if the time comes, we help where we can. Video below:
