"The Lanny Dean Experience" Storm Chasing Tours USA

Some folks have wondered and questioned, "what's it like chasing with Lanny Dean and Extreme Chase Tours?" As a Storm Chasing Tour owner, I get that very question on  a regular basis. The answer is always very hard to explain....I usually tell them that they just need to be there to really understand what it's like. Not the best answer in the world but one of my past Tour guests and owner of Storm Chasing USA has written a blog that sums up the feeling I have when I am showing my chase tour guests what the weather is doing and basically what it's like when we are on a storm chasing and tornado tour. His link is below but I also thought I would show his picture as well as the blog post he wrote as well below.

The Lanny Dean experience

I have chased with many different tour guides now and they all have had different personalities and guiding styles. We have the calm and informative style of Charles Edwards and Brian Morganti or the friendly and dedicated style of Gene Robertson and Allan Dietrich. They were all excellent tour guides but I really loved chasing with Lanny Dean.
People sometimes ask me what I find so interesting about storms. I am always a bit surprised by the question, like “How can you not be fascinated by tornadoes?!”. I guess everyone would find a full contrast, destructive tornado fascinating but we all know storm chasing is not like that every day. What makes every day special is the build up, the growing excitement, the let-downs and surprises, and the clues the storms gives you it might produce something spectacular.
That is why you can look at dark coloured, condensed water in the sky for hours – with an adrenalin rush. Often, you have no idea what you are looking at, what might happen or if you have any reasons to be excited – and that is what Lanny Dean brings to the storms. He has seen some 300-400 tornadoes I think but is still over excited about inflow, possible funnel clouds and wall clouds and he really brought that passion (and knowledge) to us guests.
Below is a video I just put up on Youtube that was filmed on our only real chase day of the unlucky tour of May 2014. We saw an anti-cyclonic land spout tornado that day (not in the video) but nothing else really, it still was a spectacular day thanks to the excitement and passion brought by Lanny.

Mulvane, Kansas tornado 10 years ago today....

10 years ago today, I documented one of the most photogenic tornadoes to date, the infamous Mulvane, Kansas tornado from very close range.

This tornado was rated as an F-3 tornado and caused significant damage to a few homes along/east of HWY 15 in Mulvane. We were able to document this tornado from very close range as it hit a home and lofted debris thousands of feet into the air. Video link below:

EXTREME CHASE TOURS Storm Chasing Serious Business

Below is an article featuring Extreme Chase Tours and a little of what we do.:

Real Words from the Real World: Storm Chasing is Serious Business

In an age when video and picture sharing is easier than ever, the fascination with violent weather is reaching a fever pitch. Films like Twister depict storm chasing as an activity for seasoned scientists trying to learn from severe weather and provide earlier warning systems, but it’s now a major tourist industry as well. Companies across Tornado Alley are taking tourists from around the world on storm chasing vacations, driving anywhere and everywhere to find the big storm systems and charging anywhere from $1,000 to $2,700 for a week-long tour.

Although tourists get the thrill of the chase, the tours are frustrating emergency crews that are trying to keep the public safe. In Kansas, Rush County Emergency Management Director Jim Fisher says storm chasing tours can clog up roadways and cause dangerous situations. In one instance, a county road was blocked by a tour van, with tourists arguing that they’d paid for the tour and had the right to set up tripods in the middle of the road.“We tried to run them off, but they have every legal right to be out there, even if they are in our way,” said Fisher.Of course, not all storm chasing tours are clogging up roadways. Lanny Dean of Extreme Chase Tours stays out of the way of emergency teams and also helps provide vital information about storms to emergency workers. That same night in Kansas, rather than snapping pictures in the middle of the county road, Dean provided key information to emergency teams 10 minutes before the tornado hit. In general, Dean tries to steer clear of the large groups of tourists.

Mike Umsheid, Dodge City Meteorologist, says the more veteran chasers provide real-time information rather than simply hoping for the thrill of a storm.“[Some tourists] will set their tripods up on the white line of a highway, or in the middle of a dirt road. The tour operators running these things are supposed to manage that. Some do a better job than others,” Umsheid said. While witnessing a tornado is exciting, it’s also not something to be taken lightly. When it comes to storm chasing, always keep in mind that nearby residents in the path of the storm are in very real danger, and it’s important to help emergency teams do their jobs and keep people safe.

Storm Chasing Proves To Be Popular Pastime

Decent article about storm chasing featuring Extreme Chase Tours. I personally think they did a pretty good job, especially with depicting what we really do...from teaching our guests about severe weather and storm chasing to actually reporting the severe weather and what we are seeing. La Crosse KS Tornado 5-25-12 Video

We have been so busy with the tours that I simply have not had time to update the blog with any news. From tornadoes in Kansas back on April 14, tornadoes in New Mexico to Tornadoes back in Kansas on 5-25-12.....we have been really busy!

Below is just a quick video of the tornado near La Crosse, KS from the 25Th that we intercepted and filmed. Eric did a wonderful job doing phoners with KAKE trying to help get the word out as I called DDC directly to let them know exactly what was going on. We were very worried that
La Crosse might take a direct hit...and they actually did from smaller EF-1 satellite tornado as can be seen in the graphic below:
When we first arrived on the south side of La Crosse, the police officer and county officials did not even know that there was indeed a tornado on the ground. They had heard about the tornado warning but "didn't really see any danger"....as we all know this can and does happen more than what the actual public knows. While I commend the local spotters for doing their job (after the fact) this video should be a clear testament to all local city and county officials as to what chasers can do in helping with the warning process.
I have taken much heat early this year from the situation that happened up in Dickinson County, I would encourage all those folks from Dickinson county and all the "media" that picked up the story to re-think the role that chasers can and do often play....even a those that run or own a storm chasing tour business. WE DO NOT MAKE A LIVING OFF OF THE DEMISE OF OTHERS....I certainly do not know one single chaser that makes an entire living off of weather as a whole to begin with. What we do is enjoy mother nature in all of her glory, good and bad. And when/if the time comes, we help where we can. Video below:

GREENSBURG KS 5 YEARS AGO TODAY 5-4-2007

5 years ago today (5-4-2007) my life in the world of weather changed forever as well as the lives of so many folks in and around Greensburg KS. I was working for KAKE-TV channel 10 in Wichita, KS as their severe weather reporter and photographer. About 5 days in advance, we knew that severe weather was going to be likely for the weekend of May 4. The day before, I sent out an e-mail to the weather department specifically mentioning strong tornadoes in SW KS in fact, I actually mentioned a fear of loss of life if the CAP could break and included this verbiage in a few e-mails I sent out. Below is one I sent to our production company at the time....

We are working on sending a cameraman. Please keep me informed about where y'all will be deploying to and when. Thanks. Lc

Subject: possible tornado outbreak

Lc, there will be a possible tornado outbreak on Friday. If I have
forcasted correctly, I think western Kansas from basically the HWY 283
area and this would include the cities of Greensburg, Pratt, Medicine Lodge, Woodward.
All the conditions are coming together CAPE values 3500j/kg LI -7-9 helecity 250-400M2/S2 infact, latest models are painting very nice shear in that area and there is the possibility for a few tornadoes to be long track and damaging/deadly. If the CAP and break, PEOPLE WILL DIE IF THEY DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE WEATHER TOMORROW! I will be out tomorrow reporting and trying to help get warnings out to the public, probably with Mikey. Randy and Lisa will probably be together will also be out. I really like the area from Pratt to Greesnburg. Have you heard any news or updates yet? We need a camera man like now! I really believe we could see some serious weather tomorrow, let me know as soon as you can.

Thanks and watch the weather tomorrow...it could be epic!

Peace, Lanny

As can be seen in my email to our production company, I had an idea that we could see some serious stuff...but I never thought it would be as bad as it was and I never thought I would have to make life and death decisions for other people like I did. I tried to help as much a I could....just a little of the video below.

Oklahoma Tornadofest!

5-24-08 Tornado fest in Oklahoma! Eric and I filmed 16 tornadoes near Marshall Oklahoma yesterday...What a crazy day! Ran the early morning forecast and targeted Northern Oklahoma when most chasers were up in Nebraska!!!....saw the outflow boundry from the early morning convection and although upper support was lacking, we chose south into better CAPE 3500j/kg along and North of the boundry. It paid off!

We have filmed 23 tornadoes in the last 3 days in Kansas and Oklahoma!

Greensburg

Since the first of May I have been asked from other chasers as well as quite a few production companies about my video and selling it again for the year anniversary. Until now I have not really responded to the request but after seeing more of Dick M video on his blog site I thought I might address the issue.
For those who want to see what it was really like in Grensburg, and I say "really like" because there have been many people that went into Greensburg the day after or a week later or longer and somehow they say "it was bad" There have even been a few chasers implying that they were in the city that night when they were up in Northern Kansas! I find myself sick when I think about all the ignorant people trying to capitalize off of someone else's tragedy.
For the ones who were really there...they know what it was like and certainly do not want to re-live any of it.
I have had many people ask me "what was it like?"......since I am no longer posting any of my video from Greensburg, I would encourage all interested people to go to Dick M site at:
http://www.stackedplates.blogspot.com/
Dick, Darrin and company were right there right after the tornado went through and were able to help out quite a few people. Eric Duncan was helping as well.
Although I hate to say it, I still deal with Greensburg day to day, it is still a struggle. For many of you who saw our show "Tornado Hunters" saw what I went through.
For those who want to see more, please check out Dicks site...he was right there just like me or anyone else.

May 1st Tornadoes!

Nikon D80 1.3 sec. F22 Iso 100 Copyright Lanny Dean 2008, watermarked
What a day.... filmed 3 tornadoes south and north of Fredonia and then a night "nado" north of Altoona KS.

All in all not a bad day but the best tornado was down in Oklahoma near the town of Pawhuska.

I think Mike Scantlin did a great job of getting to the game and shot some great video!

I had planned on going into Arkansas the next day but after blowing all 4 tires on the tornado truck I decided to make my way back to T- town and lick my wounds. Many thanks to Eric and the "guru: for nowcasting after I lost data and many thanks to JD for helping me with my tire situation. Looks like I missed a major outbreak but I just could not chance it.
Looks like Reed and the TVN boys got some good stuff as well. By the way, thanks for passing me doing like about 100mph Reed! lol
